Lockheed Martin, a global defense giant, has proposed significant technology upgrades and direct industrial investments as part of the offset package in its sale of F-16V Block 70/72 fighter aircraft to Thailand. This sale is aimed at bolstering the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) as it seeks to modernize its fleet.
The RTAF plans to acquire an initial batch of four F-16V jets to replace its aging F-16A/B Block 15 Fighting Falcons, which are operational with 102 Squadron at Korat airbase. This procurement is expected to take place between 2025 and 2034, ensuring that Thailand’s air defense capabilities remain up to par with regional powers.
Technology Upgrades for Thailand’s F-16 Fleet
As part of the F-16V offer to Thailand, Lockheed Martin has proposed integrating Link 16 secure datalink systems and Mode 5 Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) technology into the F-16A/B aircraft that are currently operational. This radar-based IFF system, coupled with Link 16, will allow for better communication between the older F-16A/B aircraft and the newly acquired F-16V Block 70/72 aircraft.
Enhancing Interoperability for RTAF
By combining Link 16 and Mode 5 IFF systems, Lockheed Martin aims to create an interoperability solution for Thailand’s air force. In late August, Lockheed Martin submitted its updated offsets proposal to Thailand. The company has valued the offset package at USD 1.7 billion, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The offsets proposal includes a range of industrial investments and other offers designed to support Thailand’s aviation industry and its broader economic development goals. As part of the deal, Lockheed Martin is also offering to upskill local talent through university partnerships, ensuring that Thailand benefits from sustainable, long-term growth in its defense and aviation sectors.
