Creating History One-Step At A Time: INSV Tarini Arrives at Fremantle, Australia

After a tumultuous voyage lasting 39 days, covering approximately 4,900 nautical miles, the Indian Naval Sailing Vessel (INSV) Tarini finally made land at Fremantle, Australia, a significant step in its ambitious global circumnavigation voyage, also known as “Navika Sagar Parikrama II.” The landmark expedition celebrates gender equality and aims to showcase India’s naval prowess whilst strengthening India’s commitment to maritime cooperation. 

Navika Sagar Parikrama II: An Overview

The expedition was flagged off on October 2, 2024, by Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi. Its journey started from Goa, and the vessel is set to circumnavigate the entire globe, with the first stop at Fremantle, Australia. INSV Tarini is headed by Lieutenant Commander Dilna K and Lieutenant Commander Roopa A, thus continuing the legacy of the first woman-led naval circumnavigation mission, Navika Sagar Parikrama.

The Challenging Voyage Across the Indian Ocean

INSV Tarini departed from Goa, on a nonstop journey across the Indian Ocean. It crossed the Equator on October 16th and passed the Tropic of Capricorn on October 27th. Throughout with expedition, the crew was constantly met with challenging weather conditions, including raging storms with powerful winds blowing at a speed of 40 knots. However, the formidable endurance and perseverance of the crew were evident, showcasing the inherent resilience of the Indian Navy. 

Crew Resilience and CNS Support

The CNS has closely monitored the expedition, providing support and receiving regular updates. Admiral Tripathi even communicated with the crew on the eve of Diwali to extend not only his admiration and encouragement but also to wish them well. Such regular interaction with the Navy Chief also served to reinforce the morale of the crew, who continued to express their enthusiasm and resolve towards the completion of the mission, adhering to the spirit of the Indian Navy.

INSV Tarini arrived in Fremantle, Australia around midday on November 09th. The vessel was met with a jubilant reception, amidst the sound of traditional drums and cheering. It was received by the Consul General Of India in Perth, the Defense Advisor from Canberra, members of the Royal Australian Navy, and multiple representatives of the Indian Navy Sailing Association (INSA), signifying the importance of the expedition to both Indian and Australian communities.

The Mission of Navika Sagar Parikrama II

The expedition is the second installment of an Indian Navy initiative “Navika Sagar Parikrama” and is of great cultural and historical significance. Throughout the expedition, as the Indian vessel charters its way across international waters, it will underscore not only the capability, strength, and professionalism but also the unending courage and the love for adventure, of the Indian Navy. Furthermore, the journey aims to enrich the maritime ties between the nation and its allies. The historic expedition also hopes to promote gender equality, especially in the armed forces, and crystallize the important legacy of INSV Tarini. 

Advancing International Maritime Relations

With the success of Navika Sagar Parikrama II, India aims to highlight its growing maritime reach and hopes to collaborate with international partners, such as Australia, that share the ideal of free and open Indo-Pacific water. The expedition is also set to meet with local communities and defense counterparts in each port to foster stronger ties while promoting naval security, peace, and environmental stewardship. 

What’s Next For INSV Tarini?

After Australia, the Indian vessel is preparing for the next leg of the journey, Lyttelton in New Zealand. The 56-foot sailing vessel, built by Aquarius Shipyard Ltd., is equipped with all the necessary navigation, communication, and safety equipment. The crew is motivated and committed to the mission, thus showcasing the robust naval tradition and commitment of the Indian Navy.
