Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin Appointed First Woman Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services

October 1, 2024, marks a monumental day in Indian Armed Forces Medical Services’ history as it welcomes its first-ever female Director General in Vice Admiral Arti Sarin. It’s a monumental event for AFMS and women in military leadership. As the first female DGAFMS, Vice Admiral Sarin has raised the flag for gender equality in the defense sector. 

This is the highest medical appointment in India’s armed forces, that comes under the direct supervision of the Ministry of Defense. This crucial role allows Surgeon Sarin to oversee the various medical policies and healthcare delivery systems across all branches of the military.

Vice Admiral Sarin is a graduate of the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College, in Pune. She completed her initial medical training and later joined AFMC in December 1985. She is a qualified doctor with an excellent academic record:

Before being appointed as the 46th DGAFMS, Surgeon Vice Admiral Sarin spent 38 years with the military, serving as the DGMS (Navy), DGMS (Air), and Director and Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College (DCAFMS).

In her early career, Surgeon Vice Admiral Sarin also served as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, Surgeon Lieutenant in the Indian Navy, and Air Marshal in the Indian Air Force. The Flag officer is concurrently serving as the head of the navy’s medical services directorate
