Air Force Station in Spiti, Himachal

Date:

Kaza is the main town of Spiti, and Spiti Valley is renowned for its monasteries and spiritual significance. The valley is surrounded by rugged Himalayan peaks and remains cut off from the world during winter. Situated at an altitude of 12,500 feet above sea level, it lies on the Indo-Tibet border. In fact, one can overlook China from Spiti Valley. It is one of the most breathtaking places in the world. Those who have visited Chitkul and Chandratal would understand what I mean. China certainly has an eye on this piece of heaven.

A feasibility study for establishing a new airfield and airbase in Spiti was conducted by a team from the Defence Ministry at Rangrik. However, no concrete steps have been taken yet. The strategic significance of this airstrip cannot be overstated, as it would enable quicker deployment of air assets, enhanced surveillance, and improved logistical support. Given China’s rapid infrastructure expansion along its side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), it is imperative for India to develop its infrastructure in Spiti to keep pace.

Strategic Importance of the Central Sector

The central sector, covering the LAC along Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, holds immense strategic importance for India’s defence. Enhancing air capabilities by upgrading existing civil infrastructure and establishing new landing grounds in this region is the need of the hour. A functional airfield and airbase in Spiti would act as a force multiplier, significantly strengthening India’s ability to counter potential threats from across the border.

With increasing concerns over China’s infrastructural developments near the LAC, India must accelerate its efforts to establish airbases and improve military preparedness in this critical region. Besides its military role, the airstrip could also facilitate civilian air traffic, particularly during winter, when Spiti Valley is inaccessible due to heavy snowfall.

Is there any progress in this direction? There has been no mention of it in this year’s defence budget. Has the Himachal government identified the exact location for the airfield? Could it be integrated with a civil airport in the future? What is the security establishment’s threat assessment for this strategically vital location?

These questions demand answers. It is time we secured an airbase in Spiti—perhaps even an airport.

P.S.: I raised this issue six months ago on Life of Soldiers, yet no real action has been taken. Looking forward to speaking with the Himachal Chief Minister about this matter, as well as the welfare of soldiers and veterans, in the near future.
