The 10th edition of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise, MITRA SHAKTI, has officially begun today at the Army Training School in Maduru Oya, Sri Lanka. Running from August 12 to August 25, 2024, this annual training event marks a significant step in strengthening the defense ties between India and Sri Lanka. With an Indian contingent of 106 personnel, primarily from the Rajputana Rifles, and Sri Lankan forces from the Gajaba Regiment, this exercise is designed to boost joint operational capabilities in counter-insurgency scenarios under the United Nations Mandate.

The India-Sri Lanka Joint Military Exercise MITRA SHAKTI is an annual event conducted alternately in India and Sri Lanka. Following the last edition held in Pune in November 2023, this year’s exercise in Sri Lanka aims to refine the collaborative military efforts between the two nations.

The primary objective of MITRA SHAKTI is to enhance the joint military capability of both armies to undertake counter-insurgency operations in semi-urban environments. The focus of the exercise is aligned with Chapter VII of the United Nations Mandate, which deals with action concerning threats to peace, breaches of the peace, and acts of aggression.

Throughout the exercise, a range of tactical drills will be rehearsed. These include responses to terrorist actions, the establishment of a joint command post, setting up an intelligence and surveillance center, securing helipads and landing sites, conducting small team insertion and extraction, special heliborne operations, and cordon and search operations. The exercise also emphasizes the use of drones and counter-drone systems, reflecting the evolving nature of modern warfare.

MITRA SHAKTI serves as a platform for both armies to share best practices in tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting joint operations. The exercise will not only improve interoperability but also foster camaraderie between the two forces. Ultimately, this joint military exercise will enhance defense cooperation and further strengthen the bilateral relations between India and Sri Lanka.

As the 10th edition of MITRA SHAKTI progresses, it stands as a testament to the growing defense cooperation between India and Sri Lanka. This joint military exercise not only enhances the operational readiness of both forces but also solidifies the bond between the two nations, paving the way for continued collaboration in the future.
