Airfield and Airbase in Spiti: A Strategic Necessity

Date:

The Indian Air Force (IAF) urgently needs an airfield and airbase in Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh, to strengthen its strategic capabilities in the region. The small town of Tabo is an ideal location, while Rangrik’s feasibility should be taken seriously. Despite reconnaissance missions conducted a few years back, the project has not progressed significantly. Tabo overlooks the Tibetan Plateau in China, providing crucial maneuvering space for the IAF if tensions escalate in Eastern Ladakh.

Meanwhile, China continues to expand its infrastructure opposite Sangla Valley and Spiti, posing a growing concern for India’s security.

Connectivity Issues in Spiti Valley

The connectivity of Spiti Valley remains subpar, and this is a significant challenge for the Indian Army to maintain year-round presence in the region. Roads ahead of Pooh are treacherous, and they become inaccessible during the harsh winter months. While Leh in Ladakh has benefited from the Rohtang Tunnel, Kaza in Himachal Pradesh is still cut off during winters, further complicating military logistics.

Feasibility Study of Rangrik Airfield

A feasibility study for establishing a new airfield and airbase in Spiti was conducted by a team from the Defence Ministry at Rangrik. However, no concrete steps have been taken yet. The strategic importance of this airstrip cannot be overstated, as it would allow for quicker deployment of air assets, surveillance, and logistical support. With China’s rapid infrastructure expansion on its side of the Line of Actual Control (LAC), it is crucial for India to develop its infrastructure in Spiti to match these advancements.

Strategic Importance of the Central Sector

The central sector, covering the LAC along Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand, is of great strategic significance for India’s defense. Boosting air capabilities by upgrading existing civil infrastructure and setting up new landing grounds in this sector is the need of the hour. A functional airfield and airbase in Spiti would act as a force multiplier, enhancing India’s ability to defend against any potential threat from across the border.

With growing concerns over China’s infrastructural development near the LAC, it is imperative for India to accelerate efforts to establish airbases and improve military preparedness in this critical region.
