After closely monitoring the Ukraine-Russia war, one can safely say that the main threat to tanks now comes from drones—particularly heat-seeking drones that can target the exhaust and cause a tank to blow up. Tanks need inbuilt sensors and an active protection system to neutralize all drones at a fair distance. With drones being deployed in swarms, it has become even more difficult to neutralize them all within seconds.
We need to refocus our conventional warfighting apparatus. Why are tanks necessary in modern-day battles? Are tanks even suitable for a highly mobile, hybrid style of warfare? In a technology-driven battlefield, is ground presence still essential? It is, especially when dealing with countries like Pakistan or China.
We need tanks with effective anti-drone systems, not just superficial camouflage. The solution must be highly technology-driven to counter highly sophisticated, technology-based attacks.
Some solutions and food for thought:
- Electric Tanks: Should we consider tanks powered by electricity rather than fossil fuels? This would eliminate the problem of exhaust emissions, plugging one major vulnerability—heat-seeking drones targeting the exhaust.
- Electromagnetic Fields: Can electric tanks generate an electromagnetic field around themselves to neutralize any drones in close proximity, effectively jamming and neutralizing them at a safe distance?
- Reduced Manpower: Can tank crews be reduced to two or even one person, with automation handling most aspects of tank operation?
- Weight and Armour Balance: Can these electric tanks strike the right balance between weight, armor, and firepower?
There was some discussion about electric tanks being developed in the U.S. While it was claimed by Mr. Trump that they were being made for environmental protection, I suspect their primary goal is self-protection.
