The Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has introduced a cutting-edge Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) with the lightest Front Hard Armour Panel (FHAP), designed for enhanced protection and comfort. This breakthrough in defense technology aligns with BIS standards and is set to significantly bolster the safety of Indian Armed Forces personnel.
In a significant advancement for the Indian defense sector, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed an innovative Bullet Proof Jacket (BPJ) that features the lightest Front Hard Armour Panel (FHAP) available today. This state-of-the-art BPJ has been engineered in two configurations—In-Conjunction-With (ICW) and Standalone—each offering different areal densities for the FHAP, catering to various operational needs.
This development is a part of a dedicated DRDO project, and efforts to transfer the technology to Indian industries have already commenced under DRDO’s Transfer of Technology (ToT) Policy. This move is expected to accelerate the production of these jackets, making them widely available for use by the Indian Armed Forces and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs).
What sets this BPJ apart is its novel design approach, which incorporates cutting-edge materials and processes. The jacket meets BIS standard 17051, confirming it as the lightest BPJ of Level 6 protection, with a medium-sized jacket weighing approximately 10.1 kg. This reduction in weight significantly enhances wearability and comfort, a critical factor during prolonged operations in challenging environments.
Additionally, the jacket boasts a unique Quick Release Mechanism (QRM), a feature that further improves its practicality in high-pressure situations. The BPJ offers robust protection against some of the most formidable threats, including 7.62×54 R AP/API rounds, which are among the most dangerous munitions currently in use.
This information was provided by Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth in a written reply to CM Ramesh during a recent session of the Lok Sabha. The introduction of this advanced BPJ represents a substantial leap forward in ensuring the safety and operational efficiency of India’s defense personnel.
With the DRDO’s innovative approach to bulletproof jacket design, Indian defense forces are now better equipped to face modern threats. This technological breakthrough not only enhances soldier protection but also underscores India’s growing capabilities in defense manufacturing.
