In the early hours of August 9, 2024, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted a swift and efficient Medical Evacuation (MEDEVAC) operation, rescuing a 39-year-old crew member from the Marshall Island-flagged vessel, Olympia GR, off the coast of Port Blair. The vessel, en route from Haldia to Indonesia, was navigating through the Andaman and Nicobar Islands when the crew member suffered a severe injury in the engine room, crushing his left thumb.

The vessel’s master immediately contacted the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Port Blair at 1608 hours on August 8, 2024, seeking urgent assistance for the injured crew member. Responding promptly, MRCC Port Blair advised the vessel to head towards Port Blair for an expedited rescue. Concurrently, MRCC alerted ICG’s Search and Rescue (SAR) units, comprising a ship and a helicopter stationed at Port Blair, to be on standby for the MEDEVAC.

Shortly thereafter, the ICG ship C-428 was deployed from Port Blair to execute the rescue operation. The ship successfully evacuated the patient from MV Olympia GR and brought him safely to Port Blair on the morning of the same day. The injured crew member was then promptly transferred to GB Pant Hospital in Port Blair for further medical treatment.
