Date:

In a landmark achievement, showcasing India’s mountaineering prowess and training excellence, a Joint National Mountaineering Team has successfully summited Mount Everest (8,848.86 meters) on May 23, 2025. This national expedition team comprised seasoned instructors from India’s best mountaineering institutions, such as the Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering & Winter Sports (JIM&WS), Pahalgam, the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering (NIM), Uttarkashi, and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI), Darjeeling.

The expedition, which symbolizes not only physical endurance but also national pride and military preparedness, was ceremonially flagged off by the Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri Shri Sanjay Seth on March 26, 2025, in New Delhi. Before setting the expedition off, he had addressed the nation highlighting how the mountaineering institutes embody PM Modi’s vision to foster self-reliance, resilience & fearless spirit among youth.

The joint expedition team was headed by Colonel Anshuman Bhadauria, Principal of NIM Uttarkashi, and Colonel Hem Chandra Singh, Principal of JIM&WS Pahalgam. The summit team included five distinguished mountaineering instructors:

  • Havildar Rajendra Mukhiya (JIM&WS)
  • Mr. Rakesh Singh Rana (NIM)
  • Subedar Bahadur Pahan (NIM)
  • Mr. Pasang Tenzing Sherpa (HMI)
  • Havildar Thupstan Tsewang (HMI)

As part of the expedition’s phased acclimatization strategy, the team successfully summited Mt. Lobuche (6,119 meters) on April 18, 2025, showcasing their readiness and advanced high-altitude training to tackle the world’s highest summit. The successful climb of Mount Everest—often termed the ultimate test of human endurance and leadership—was a culmination of months of preparation, tactical planning, and rigorous physical conditioning.

This successful collaboration among India’s top mountaineering institutions, which operate under the Ministry of Defence, highlights not only the strategic and logistical preparedness but also serves as a testament to their valiant effort. The combined resource, experience, and training reflect the integration of civil-military cooperation towards boosting adventure sports. Notably, institutions like NIM Uttarkashi, JIM&WS Pahalgam, and HMI Darjeeling play a critical role in the country’s preparedness for extreme-terrain operations.

Mountaineering, especially at altitudes above 8,000 meters, requires endurance, risk assessment proficiency, and crisis-response capability. The successful ascent by the Joint National Mountaineering team underscores their readiness and extensive survivability training, environmental adaptability, and team-based execution.

Leadership, Resilience, and National Honor

The joint expedition under the leadership of Col Bhadauria and Col Singh, in its bid to conquer Mount Everest, is emblematic of leadership, resilience, heroism, and national honor. The Joint National Mountaineering team engaged in a tactical doctrine and integrated real-time decision-making to achieve this feat. They had to cover various critical aspects such as rescue training, acclimation, oxygen management, and weather monitoring. Despite the challenges faced by the team, including blizzard conditions, sub-zero temperatures, and altitude-induced hypoxia, it emerged victorious and achieved the historic feat of scaling the summit of Mount Everest.

The selection of instructions, prior to the mission, adhered to stringent criteria primarily based on previous summits, successful mission completion, instructional qualifications and of course, high altitude expertise. The success is not only a matter of pride domestically but also a signal to the world, cementing its position in global mountaineering.

Strategic and Diplomatic Significance

The timing and execution of this expedition are geopolitically relevant, occurring in a region with increasing strategic surveillance importance. Mount Everest, located along the China-Nepal border, serves as a critical marker for regional environmental studies, territorial awareness, and bilateral expeditionary collaboration. The team’s safe descent to Everest Base Camp and onward movement toward Kathmandu aligns with standard post-climb evacuation and logistical coordination practices.

This operation also supports India-Nepal defense and cultural ties, aligning with ongoing cooperation in Himalayan border security and search-and-rescue missions in extreme terrain.

A Model of Excellence in Defense-Oriented Adventure Training

India’s commitment to cultivating physically and mentally resilient soldiers through adventure-based training models is exemplified in this summit. The participating mountaineering institutes continue to serve as incubators for military-grade leadership, rescue readiness, and national resilience development. Their success enhances India’s capabilities in disaster response, terrain-specific reconnaissance, and combat logistics under duress.
