Indian Navy’s Mega Project to Build Advanced Warships and Indian Army’s Tank Modernization Set for Approval

Date:

Indian government’s upcoming clearance of significant defence projects, including the Indian Navy’s plan to build seven advanced warships and the Indian Army’s initiative to induct 1,700 new tanks to replace its aging fleet of T-72 battle tanks. The projects, worth over Rs 1.3 lakh crore, will significantly enhance India’s defence capabilities.

The Indian government is on the verge of approving major defence projects that are set to bolster the nation’s military strength. Among the most notable are the Indian Navy’s Rs 70,000 crore plan to construct seven new advanced warships and the Indian Army’s project to induct 1,700 state-of-the-art tanks, replacing the outdated Russian-origin T-72 battle tanks. These initiatives reflect India’s strategic push towards modernizing its armed forces and enhancing its defence infrastructure.

The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) is expected to give the green light to projects valued at over Rs 1.3 lakh crore in an upcoming meeting on Tuesday. According to sources from the Defence Ministry, this decision will significantly impact the Indian Navy and Army’s future operational capabilities.

For the Navy’s Project 17 Bravo, which involves building seven of the most advanced warships, Mazagon Dockyards Limited (MDL) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) are the leading contenders. Both shipyards are already engaged in constructing frigates under Project 17A (Nilgiri class), with MDL handling four and GRSE three of these vessels. However, the tender process will also be open to other shipyards classified under category 1, ensuring competitive participation.

There is speculation that the project may be divided between two shipyards, with the lowest bidder awarded the construction of four warships, while the other may settle with three. This approach would expedite the completion of the project and ensure the timely induction of these advanced warships into the Navy.

In parallel, the Indian Army’s over Rs 50,000 crore initiative to procure 1,700 future-ready combat vehicles is also on the agenda. These new tanks are intended to replace the aging T-72 models currently in service. Given the Army’s active involvement in high-altitude and desert operations, modernizing its fleet of armored vehicles is a strategic necessity. The new tanks will enhance the Army’s combat readiness and operational effectiveness across diverse terrains.

These ambitious projects underscore India’s commitment to strengthening its defence forces and maintaining a robust security posture in the region.
