The catastrophic landslide in Wayanad has claimed 210 lives, triggering a large-scale rescue operation. The Indian Army’s swift and efficient response has brought hope to the region, demonstrating remarkable engineering prowess and professional skills.

In a remarkable feat of engineering and professional skills, the Engineer Task Force of the Indian Army swiftly constructed a Bailey Bridge over the Iruvanipzha River at Chooralmala. This critical infrastructure significantly accelerated rescue operations in Wayanad. Soldiers from the NDRF, Indian Medical Corps, and Engineering Corps are also heavily involved in the rescue efforts.

To expedite the rescue operations, the Engineer Brigade formed ten specialized teams, equipped with all necessary rescue apparatus, including dog squads and heavy earth-moving equipment. These teams commenced combing operations early on August 1, 2024, across six designated zones: Punchirimattom, Mundekkai, School Area, Chooralmala Town, Village Area, and Downstream. Their thorough and efficient search mission continues relentlessly.

On August 2, 2024, major rescue efforts were concentrated in three locations: Attamala, Mundakkai, and Chooralmala. The Indian Army, in coordination with local volunteer teams, recovered bodies and shifted them to safer locations for further action by the civil administration. The Army is striving to prevent any secondary infections.

Maj Gen VT Mathew, the officer in charge of the rescue operations on behalf of the Indian Army in Wayanad, met with the Chief Minister of Kerala to update him and the state cabinet about the ongoing efforts. He also briefed Shri Arif Mohammed Khan, Honourable Governor of Kerala, and other civil dignitaries on the rescue operations.

The Indian Army’s swift response to the Wayanad landslide has been instrumental in the ongoing rescue operations. Their dedication and expertise continue to bring hope to the affected region, showcasing their unwavering commitment to saving lives and restoring normalcy.
