In a daring rescue operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) evacuated 14 crew members from the grounded bulk carrier JSW Raigad near Alibaug, Maharashtra. The incident, which occurred amidst extreme sea conditions, saw the ICG’s swift and efficient response to ensure the safety of the mariners.
Distress Call and Immediate Response
On July 25, 2024, at 1327 hours, the ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Mumbai received a distress call from the bulk carrier JSW Raigad. The vessel, measuring 122 meters, had 14 Indian crew members on board and was grounded on reefs approximately one nautical mile from Alibaug. The crew reported anchor dragging, flooding in the engine room, and loss of control.
Extreme Sea Conditions and the Decision to Airlift
Given the extreme sea conditions along the Maharashtra coast and the presence of reefs, airlifting the crew emerged as the only viable rescue option. The ICG launched the rescue operation in the early hours of July 26, 2024.
Successful Rescue Operation
Despite adverse weather conditions, a Coast Guard helicopter successfully evacuated all 14 crew members from the JSW Raigad. The crew was safely disembarked at Alibaug beach without any injuries.
The ICG Station Murud Janjira is coordinating with local authorities to provide further medical aid and support to the mariners. The situation is being closely monitored to ensure the safety of the vessel and the surrounding environment.
Monitoring and Environmental Safety
The ICG’s proactive measures and continuous monitoring aim to mitigate any potential environmental impact from the grounded vessel. Coordination with local authorities ensures comprehensive support for the mariners and the protection of the coastal environment.
The Indian Coast Guard’s prompt and efficient response in evacuating the 14 crew members from the grounded bulk carrier JSW Raigad highlights their dedication and expertise in maritime rescue operations. The successful airlift under extreme sea conditions underscores the ICG’s commitment to ensuring the safety of mariners and protecting the coastal environment.
