Prime Minister Narendra Modi Commemorates 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas and Launches Shinkun La Tunnel Project

On July 26, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored the martyrs of the Kargil War on the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. He also virtually inaugurated the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, promising all-weather connectivity and development for Ladakh.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives during the Kargil War, marking the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh. In addition to attending the Shraddhanjali Samaroh, the Prime Minister virtually witnessed the first blast of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project, a significant infrastructure development for Ladakh.

Commemoration of Kargil Vijay Diwas

On July 26, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commemorated the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas, honoring the brave soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War. The event, held at the Kargil War Memorial in Dras, Ladakh, included the Shraddhanjali Samaroh, where the Prime Minister listened to the Gaurav Gatha, a briefing on the Kargil War by NCOs, and visited Amar Sansmaran: Hut of Remembrance and Veer Bhoomi.

Launch of Shinkun La Tunnel Project

The Prime Minister also virtually inaugurated the Shinkun La Tunnel Project in Ladakh. The project features a 4.1 km long Twin-Tube tunnel at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu – Padum – Darcha Road. Once completed, it will be the highest tunnel in the world, providing all-weather connectivity to Leh. This tunnel will enhance the movement of armed forces and equipment and foster economic and social development in Ladakh.

Prime Minister’s Address at Shraddhanjali Samaroh

During his address at the Shraddhanjali Samaroh, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of Kargil Vijay Diwas, stating, “Kargil Vijay Diwas reminds us that the sacrifices made for the nation are immortal.” He recalled his time amidst the soldiers during the Kargil War and praised their bravery and dedication. The Prime Minister also condemned terrorism and highlighted the persistent threats from Pakistan, asserting that the nation would overcome all challenges.

Developments in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir

Prime Minister Modi discussed the ongoing development efforts in Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir, mentioning the upcoming fifth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370. He highlighted the progress in infrastructure, tourism, and other sectors, such as the Sindhu Central University, 4G network expansion, and the Zojila tunnel for all-weather connectivity.

Defence Reforms and Agnipath Scheme

The Prime Minister lauded the significant reforms in the defence sector over the past decade, emphasizing the need for modern equipment and a capable workforce. He discussed the Agnipath Scheme, aimed at maintaining a young and battle-ready force, and criticized past governments for neglecting the defence sector. Modi highlighted India’s growing self-reliance in defence production and the increasing focus on domestic manufacturing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Dras on the 25th Kargil Vijay Diwas and the launch of the Shinkun La Tunnel Project underscore the government’s commitment to honoring the sacrifices of Indian soldiers and fostering development in strategic regions. As India moves forward with significant defence reforms and infrastructural advancements, the nation remains dedicated to safeguarding its borders and ensuring a prosperous future for all.
