Russia Launches Major Offensive in Northeastern Ukraine – Kyiv Confirms Escalation
Ukraine’s top military commander has officially confirmed that Russia has launched a new large-scale offensive in the northeastern regions of Ukraine. General Syrskyi stated on April 9 that the number of #Russian attacks has “almost doubled” across all major frontline directions over the past week, signaling the beginning of a new phase in the war.
President Zelensky had earlier warned of Russia’s intentions to strike in the Kharkiv and Sumy regions, and now those warnings appear to have come true. Syrskyi added that Russia’s goal is to establish a buffer zone along the border, extending into the Kharkiv, Sumy, and Chernihiv regions.
Military analysts believe this renewed Russian offensive is not only about territorial gains but also aimed at strengthening Moscow’s leverage in any future negotiations.
Meanwhile, Russian forces have pushed Ukrainian troops out of parts of the Kursk region, retaking control of areas that Kyiv’s forces had captured during an incursion in August 2024. Sumy area has also been almost captured now though fighting in some parts is going on.
