The Russian government has authorized a Joint Military Deployments agreement on the mechanism for mutual dispatch of military formations, warships, and military aircraft of the Russian Federation and India. Additionally, the Russian Defense Ministry was given instructions by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin to negotiate a draft agreement with India about the process for the mutual deployment of military formations.
The formalization of this agreement for military cooperation sends a strong statement to the global community about how the relationship between Russia and India is growing. Mutual logistical support between nations during a range of military operations, such as peacekeeping missions, humanitarian assistance, and joint military exercises, is facilitated by a logistics pact like the one that is being proposed. Critical services like refueling, maintenance, and supply provisioning are typically included in the support, which also improves interoperability.
The military alliance between Russia and India dates back many years, and it is being carried further with this draft logistics agreement. A comprehensive agreement on military-technical cooperation was signed by the two nations in 2021 and it runs until 2030. The Indian Navy, out of the three services, has benefited most from these administrative agreements made with various nations, as they have improved operational turnaround and increased interoperability on the high seas. Both parties involved have benefited from the arrangements. For instance, India’s growing proportion of platforms of U.S. origin combined with the fundamental agreements with the United States and the logistics agreements with Australia and Japan have proven particularly advantageous, as they also run multiple similar military platforms.
