CDS unveils the Joint Doctrine for Amphibious Operations

Date:

In a significant development for India’s defense capabilities, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan unveiled the Joint Doctrine for Amphibious Operations during the Chiefs of Staff Committee (COSC) meeting on September 9, 2024, in New Delhi. This event marks a pivotal moment in strengthening the nation’s military preparedness, particularly in the realm of amphibious warfare, which plays a critical role in today’s evolving military landscape. The Doctrine is designed to offer comprehensive guidance to military commanders, ensuring the effective execution of amphibious operations in increasingly complex environments.

Amphibious operations, which involve the use of land, sea, and air forces to conduct offensive or defensive operations, are crucial in maintaining security and stability in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The release of this Doctrine highlights the importance of India’s growing amphibious capabilities, allowing the Armed Forces to undertake a range of operations, both during times of war and peace. These operations are especially vital in securing India’s maritime interests, given the strategic significance of the IOR, which is home to vital shipping lanes and serves as a focal point for regional and global trade.

The Doctrine also emphasizes the integration of multi-domain operations, showcasing the high level of cohesion among India’s Armed Forces. Amphibious operations require seamless coordination between the Army, Navy, and Air Force, making them a prime example of jointness in modern warfare. This unity is essential for successfully executing missions that range from humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) to full-scale military interventions. By codifying these principles, the Doctrine ensures that India’s military remains agile, flexible, and prepared to respond to diverse challenges across various operational domains.

Following the earlier release of the Joint Doctrine for Cyberspace Operations, this Doctrine further reinforces the Armed Forces’ commitment to enhancing jointness and integration. As the second major joint doctrine introduced in 2024, it underscores the necessity of cohesive military strategies in today’s interconnected world. The focus on amphibious operations is particularly timely, as they represent a critical aspect of India’s defense strategy, ensuring operational readiness across all terrains and conditions.

This comprehensive approach to joint warfare will not only bolster India’s defense posture but also contribute to regional stability, positioning the nation as a dominant force in the Indian Ocean and beyond.
