CCS Approves ₹26,000 Crore Purchase of 240 AL-31FP Engines for Su-30 MKI from HAL

Date:

On September 02, 2024,  Cabinet Committee on Security approved the procurement of 240 AL-31FP aero-engines for the Indian Air Force’s Su-30 MKI fleet. These engines, to be manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), will enhance the indigenous content and meet the operational requirements of the IAF, ensuring the country’s defense preparedness.

India continues to strengthen its defense capabilities with a significant procurement move that will enhance the operational readiness of its air force. On September 02, 2024, the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) approved a major proposal to acquire 240 AL-31FP aero-engines for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This decision not only reflects the government’s commitment to bolstering national defense but also reinforces its focus on indigenous manufacturing.

The acquisition of these 240 AL-31FP aero-engines, to be supplied by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), represents a significant investment of over ₹26,000 crore. The procurement falls under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ category, emphasizing the government’s push towards self-reliance in defense manufacturing. HAL, a leading aerospace and defense company in India, will manufacture these engines at its Koraput division, which is renowned for its advanced manufacturing capabilities.

The delivery schedule of these engines is strategically planned, with the first batch expected to be delivered within a year. The entire procurement process will be completed over a span of eight years, ensuring a steady supply of engines to meet the Indian Air Force’s operational requirements. The Su-30 MKI, one of the most powerful and strategically significant aircraft in the IAF’s fleet, will benefit immensely from this upgrade, allowing it to continue its critical role in safeguarding India’s airspace.

An important aspect of this procurement is the focus on increasing indigenous content. The AL-31FP engines will feature over 54% indigenous components, a result of HAL’s ongoing efforts to indigenize key components. This move not only reduces dependence on foreign suppliers but also contributes to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, further strengthening India’s defense manufacturing ecosystem.

The Su-30 MKI, a multi-role air superiority fighter, has been a cornerstone of the IAF’s strategic capabilities. The timely supply of these aero-engines will ensure the fleet’s sustenance, enabling the aircraft to continue their unhindered operations. This procurement is a critical step in maintaining the IAF’s operational readiness and enhancing the country’s defense preparedness in the face of evolving threats.

The approval of this procurement by the Cabinet Committee on Security underscores the importance of maintaining a robust and reliable air force. As India continues to modernize its military, investments like these are essential to ensuring that the armed forces are equipped with the best technology to protect the nation’s sovereignty.
